Car Seat Safety

The holiday season is often a time for travel with little ones in the car.  As responsible parents and caregivers, ensuring the safety of our children in motor vehicles is of utmost importance. One crucial aspect of this is properly using a car seat.

The National Safety Council provides various recommendations for the selection of proper child restraints, most importantly:

  • Children under age 1 should always ride in a rear-facing car seat.
  • Keep 1- to 3-year-olds in rear-facing car seatsfor as long as possible. Once children outgrow the height or weight limit for their rear-facing car seat, they should ride in forward-facing car seats with a harness and tether.
  • Children 4- to 7-years-old should use forward-facing car seats until they reach the top height or weight limit of the car seat’s manufacturer instructions and then move to a booster seat.
  • Keep 8- to 12-year-olds in booster seats until they are big enough to fit into seat belts properly.
  • Be sure all passengers use seat belts correctly, with the lap-belt low on the hips and the shoulder belt across the chest, not resting on the neck. Never place a shoulder belt under an arm or behind your back.

  1. Reviewing Car Seat Manual and Reconfiguring as Your Child Ages

In addition to following the above guidelines, to maximize car seat safety it is imperative to carefully read and understand the car seat manual. The manual provides crucial instructions on installation, proper usage, weight limits, and height restrictions. Each car seat has its own unique features, so following manufacturer guidelines is key.

As children grow, their needs change, and so should their car seats. Ensure that you are using the appropriate car seat for your child’s age and weight. Most car seats come with options to adjust harness positions and reclining angles, providing optimal safety for each stage of your child’s development. Regularly review and adjust the car seat configuration to ensure it is providing the necessary support and protection for your child.

  1. Car Seat Expiration Upon a Motor Vehicle Accident

Additionally, if your car seat is involved in a motor vehicle accident, it is essential to replace it immediately, even if there is no visible damage. During an accident, the structural integrity of the car seat may be compromised, and it may no longer provide the necessary protection.  The safest thing to do, even in a low speed, low impact accident, is to replace the car seat.

  1. Local Fire Departments Offering Car Seat Installation Services

Installing a car seat correctly can be a complex task. Fortunately, many local fire departments offer car seat installation services to help parents and caregivers ensure proper installation. These services are typically free of charge and staffed by trained professionals who can guide you through the installation process.

Wisconsin State Law provides specific penalties for non-compliance, so it is important to ensure you comply.

As you embark on your holiday journeys, it’s essential to ensure your child’s safety in the car to provide you with peace of mind while you make precious memories with your loved ones.
